Dane Garrett is 30 years old and resides at Nottoway Prison. He is close to getting out and is biding his time and is attempting to get his GED when he sees her, the new teacher, Ms. Newsome.
Ella Newsome is a teacher and has decided to work in the prison system. She has no idea what she is getting into or what the level of the prisoners are at. When she reads the first of the papers she is intrigued by the writing of the prisoner named Garrett.
When Ella and Dane have a "chance" encounter, Ella realizes what Dane has risked for her. Will Dane and Ella be able to hold off for a happy ever after or will the realization of real life prevent a happy ever after?
I really enjoyed this novella and a look at second chances.
I loved that Ella gave the men in the prison some hope, especially Dane. Ella looked beyond the "label" that Dane was given and saw the man behind it. She gave him a reason to turn his life around and show him that he could be more.
I also really liked how Ella's parents gave Dane the benefit of the doubt yet her best friend didn't and Ella chose what she thought was best for her.
What I really liked about the book was how the author really showed how important it was to give people a second chance at life and ignore labels as we don't know why or how they got in their circumstances and they deserve a chance at turning their lives around.
