Wing night!

My son absolutely loves chicken wings! But the problem is finding one that is healthy as his favorite is Pinty's wings.

Jasinda had a recipe in Big Girls Do It Running that I have made before and knew that I needed to make it again. These ones are full of flavour and I was lucky that the kids wanted to help make them this time. They have been doing awesome lately with helping cook dinner and I am so glad that they are contributing and seeing what is going into their meals!

These wings are are super saucy and so full of flavour. They include quite a few ingredients that I would never have guessed to put on wings - mayonnaise, Greek yogurt and molasses.

My kids aren't too keen on spice so I didn't put any hot sauce in them but I think a tiny bit would give them some extra flavour. They are still so delicious and I look forward to trying to make some of my own sometime soon based on this recipe!

My review of My Highland Husband by Nancy Pennick

Lady Juliet Kingston is the daughter of the Duke of Norchester and is being sent from England to Scotland to marry a laird's son in order to achieve peace between their two countries. Yet Juliet is leaving behind her love Lord John Alder whom she thought she would marry.

Ross MacLaren was not happy to learn of his upcoming nuptials to a complete stranger but when he sees Juliet he realizes that he could easily fall in love with her. But will he be able to convince Juliet that they are meant to be together?

As Juliet and Ross begin to realize they have feelings for one another, Juliet's past comes back looking for a second chance. Will Juliet decide on a past love or her current? When loyalties are in question what will happen to everyone involved?

I really enjoyed this book and the mix of the past yet their love life didn't feel like it was from the past at all.

I really liked Juliet's character and how she truly evolved into a strong woman who knew what she wanted and what she was living for. She definitely had her share of disappointments in life but she really wanted to be happy and lived her life to the best ability that she could and was a super caring person. I liked reading how everyone initially viewed her and how everyone's opinions about her changed.

Ross was definitely a sexy Scot and I loved the loyalty of his character and also the fun that he had when he could. He was dedicated to his people and his wife and he was worried about that conflict.

John was interesting in that you knew at one point he had to of been a good guy for Juliet to fall for him but losing her sent him in a crazy tailspin and I was never sure of what his next actions were going to be as he proved that he wouldn't give up.

I really liked Ross's family but I was definitely pissed at his dad for awhile! I really enjoyed his sister Glynis and hope she is able to find some happiness!!

My review of Sublime Karma by Peyton Garver

Brie Lindstrom is the new girl at school and for her senior year. Right away she becomes the target for the "popular" girls and finds herself getting attention for all the wrong reasons. She gradually makes a few friends but she is afraid to let anyone know about the secrets that she holds close and the demons that she fights.

Jake Gordon is a high school senior who plays football and also plays in the band Sublime Karma. He is attracted to Brie but realizes she is very guarded. Yet soon he is vying for her attention with Ryan, the captain of the cross country team.

Will Jake be able to help break down the walls around Brie and when he learns the truth about her life will he stick by her side or will he panic and leave her?

I really enjoyed this book but it does deal with some super heavy subject matters that not everyone may be comfortable with.

My heart was so open to Brie and I felt so bad with how she was treated right away at school and harassed so much when she never did a single thing to the "popular" girls. As the book went on and I learned even more about Brie I had tears in my eyes learning about the struggles she was going through. It frustrates me that Brie's mom didn't take her kids seriously and I really wish that Leif could have lived closer to Brie.

Jake was an interesting character as he was one of the popular kids yet at the same time he was willing to risk everything for Brie. His popularity didn't matter when it came to her but that also made Brie an obvious target for Sarah and her friends. Jake had his own demons that he struggled with and he did the best he could with the hand he was given.

I loved the talk between Jake and Brie where everything was revealed and both showed so much strength and it resulted in a super strong bond between the two of them. Yet that still didn't mean that more drama didn't happen due to jumping to conclusions!

A great book about dealing with difficult situations and having the courage to overcome them.

My review of Naughty Novellas

This is a set of seven novellas ranging from BDSM to paranormal!

1) The Woodsman by Belle Scarlett

This is an adaption of Little Red Riding Hood. When Lady Lily Rouge is on her way to meet her future husband, the Marquis d'Evereux she meets a wolf who is in need of a virgin to erase the curse he is under.

This was an enjoyable story and I really liked the character of Sir Marrok Ulfang. I liked that he was willing to sacrifice everything for Lily to be happy.

2) Kahn's Haven by Nicole Austin

Anita Bennett is out hiking when she is injured and sees a black jaguar, in Colorado. Yet she soon finds herself drawn to the jaguar who is being hunted by two men. When she learns that the jaguar, Rakahnga, can shift will she be willing to do what it takes to stay with him?

I liked this story and how Anita had to trust the jaguar to help her even before she realized what it even was. I liked how Kahn was protecting Anita even though he put himself at risk by doing so. The ending was a little worrisome but I loved how everything turned out!

3) Anything You Want by Tina Donahue

Jamie Parker decides to do something totally differnt and heads to Wicked Desires Resort to have all of her "kinky" dreams come true. As she is on the curvy side she is used to being overlooked by men and is nervous about being there.

Creed Sanders and Tav Kearney are video game developers who are struggling on their next game when they meet Jamie whom they believe will solve all of their problems.

This was a fun read about having all of one's desires coming true and yet being nervous for it to become reality. This novella was hot and lots of action involving food!

4) Tropic of Pleasure by Tina Donahue

Cara Guzman works for Hudson Merrick and Ryder Dane and knows all about their involvement in the BDSM world. She asks for them to teach her but they are reluctant given that her dad's riches have helped start up their company.

Will Hudson and Ryder risk it all for Cara and what will she be willing to risk to convince them that this is what she wants?

Another good story about a beginner in the BDSM world. I loved how patient they were with her but at the same time really tested her to make sure that she was really ready for what was entailed!

5) The Property of Twin Dragons by Berengaria Brown

Lois McCubbin is the accountant at Optimized Design along with her best friend Bree. Lois is the accountant and knows something is wring with the books but can't figure out what it is. Her boss, Karl Mallory is a jerk who seems to be running the company into the ground.

Drake Kelekona is immediately attracted to Lois when he first meets her but he is unsure if she is involved in the problems with the money disappearing for Optimized Design. He is holding two secrets from her which he is unsure of how she will take the truth.

I really enjoyed this story and although you pretty much knew what was going to happen from the beginning of the book I liked reading how everything played out and the story kept me involved. Karl Mallory was such a jerk and I can't believe how he treated his employees!

6) Walpurgis Nights by Katherine Kingston

Fianna is a witch who must choose a man to sleep with on the night of a festival. She is approached by three local men but when she chooses an outsider, Henrik, her life just got a little riskier. As she gets to know Henrik, a Norseman, a little more she finds herself falling for him but doesn't want to hold him back from attaining his own dreams.

When Henrik needs Fianna's help will she go to him again or will it cause her to lose her place in her own village?

I really enjoyed this story and the romance between Fianna and Henrik. I loved how much Fianna was willing to give up by not holding Henrik back and even though she knew what the consequences would be for herself. Such a great story!

7) Edge of Passion by Kathy Kulig

Dana Brennan has come to Ireland from the US for a temporary job as a harp player at Rathmoor Castle. Soon she finds herself in over her head with Jack Murray, a local man involved in BDSM. Will Dana be able to get out of her comfort zone with Jack or is she having too much trouble trusting?

This was an interesting story and I was sure initially that Dana was in way over her head until I learned about why she was holding herself back and everything began to make sense. This was a good read and a look at triggers and the power of love.

Macaroni & Cheese!!

So one of my favorite foods has to be macaroni & cheese! I have loved it since a child and it was probaly the meal I loved the most when I would go to my grandma's house. As a mom for some reason I got away from making it from scratch and I knew that I had to try the one in Jasinda's book.

So this one uses cream cheese and is very high in fat so it's not something I would have very often but it was still very delicious. Both of the kids loved it and my son had seconds right away.

Now because I used Dreamfields pasta to cook the macaroni I wasn't able to reheat it after. I think if I were to make it again I would use a gluten free pasta so I could really enjoy the leftovers. Don't get me wrong though - I did eat the leftovers cold!

As I mentioned above the recipe calls for cream cheese and I think I would have tried to melt the cream cheese ahead of time with the butter so that there were not "small cubes" of cream cheese within the pasta. There was no direction on what to do with the cream cheese so I just added it in but then it didn't mix as well.

So delicious and can't wait to make it again!

My review of What Happens in Bangkok by Daryl Devore

Erika Bailey is the owner/manager of a drag queen club in Bangkok. She is extremely tight with many of the drag queens that work for her and does what she can to provide them with a safe environment.

Darien Scott is a well known rock star and he has just gotten off tour when he is visiting with one of the leaders of a Triad group when everyone in the bar is killed but he manages to escape and now he is running for his life. With his brother Brian's help and his roommates he becomes the drag queen Apollo.

As Darien begins to work for Erika he finds himself very attracted to her but can't act on it, knowing she may discover who he really is. When it's clear that someone is out for something that Erika may have and her life is in danger will Darien be able to protect her?

I enjoyed this book and I liked the "relationship" between Erika and Darien.

I liked Erika and thought she was a strong character and loved that she owned a drag queen bar. Yet I found it weird that she was called Erik by everyone and I had to reread the beginning to make sure I was reading that right. I found "Erik" made me think of a guy and I hated that personally.

There was a lot of mystery surrounding the attacks and Erika and her club and I honestly don't feel like that was resolved enough to my liking. As of now I still am unsure of who was really responsible. I was also intrigued at how Erika was so accepting of the truth when it was revealed to her about Apollo.

I liked Darien but am still puzzled on how nobody put it together until Detective Mookjai. I know they colored his hair but it made me wonder how much of a change they did. People knew he was missing but only a couple of strangers put it together and I have no clue on how Gan didn't put it together. I found it weird that a few people knew he was Brian's brother but Erika didn't put two and two together. Darien obviously cared a lot about Erika, Brian and his friends and I loved what he did for them in the end at the club.

Brian and his friends were great and definitely some super interesting characters that we will hopefully see more of in the next book.

One thing that I didn't like was that it seemed like there was a few things left hanging. At the end of the book we discover that there is a second book coming but we still don't know about the flash drive. There is also no answer to who Raul who really is either.

I have some guesses to who walks in at the end but I guess we'll have to see!

Getting back on track

So at the start of the year I decided that it was time to get back to eating healthy and I decided to bring the kids along this time for cutting out sugar and refined carbs.

Again we used Jasinda Wilder's book Big Girls Do It Running and gradually have been cutting out sugars and crap. For the kids they stocked up on eating sugars as much as they could in the evening as I was cutting it out through the day. I know for sure my son has cheated when he was home by himself but for the most part I am extremely proud of how well they have been doing.

My picky daughter has been doing extremely well which blows me away. Although she is under weight I want her to learn that sugar doesn't need to be in everything so she has been great at following the diet. Today at school she admitted that she had a sour key from her teacher and I told her that was fine as she's really doing well. She has begun to eat salads and I am so happy at how willing she is to try everything that I am cooking!

But one of the key components of Jasinda's program is the exercise part which I must admit that we have not been doing outside of the kids sports. But in all of our defenses we have definitely had the weather working against us. The weather here in the Lower Mainland has been snow. White stuff has been all over the sidewalks and turned to ice and it has been absolutely treacherous to walk.

So I am looking forward to the snow stopping soon and getting back to walking as I really want to go in my first 5K race with the kids this year. I know I can do it and we can push each other to get it done.

So for cooking I have been using the recipes in Jasinda's book and I have also bought the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook. I can't wait to bring you the recipes that I have just begun using and letting you know how the kids are doing with them.

Looking forward to sharing some recipes with you and hopefully find some great ones that were successful for us!

My review of Relentless River by Lindsay Cross

Sheriff Bo Lawson is a retired Marine Special Operations Operator where he was known as Ice - calm and collected under pressure. His small town doesn't have much going on until a dead body washes up and the man is connected to a very dangerous man.

Cheri Boudreaux is the manager of the local bar and has a small crush on the Sheriff who keeps giving her tickets for her driving. She lives with her cousin Lamont who protected her in the past from a dangerous situation and the two are super close. Yet as he gets involved with a married women Cheri shows her disapproval.

As Bo and Cheri are faced with their respective feelings for one another, Cheri's brother Frankie comes to town and soon it is clear that Cheri's own life is in danger. Can Bo keep her safe when all of a sudden his "ice" demeanor is tested by his heart?

This is another amazing book in the Men of Mercy series. I have loved Sheriff Bo Lawson for a long time now and I am so glad he has received his own book!

I loved Bo's struggle in this book with doing his job and protecting Cheri. There was one moment when he had a huge decision to make and I'm glad he chose the right way and I agree with his decision although he definitely beat himself up over it. He pushed Cheri away when he felt like he made some wrong decisions and it shows how much his heart came into play in this book.

Cheri was a little firecracker and I thought she was a great addition! I loved how much she detested Ginger and her relationship with Lamont. Cheri also didn't want to appear weak and even though to a certain extent she was in over her head at the bar she didn't want to let anyone down so she did her best but I wish she would have asked for some help! She really loved Lamont and I wasn't surprised at how far she went to protect him, even though it put her own life in danger. I was mad though that there was no more mention of Frankie as nothing was resolved there.

I really liked the end and how things came together!

I was hoping to get to see more of the other characters in this book  from the series besides Riser but I'm hoping that this means that the next book belongs to Riser.

My review of Murder in Vail by Judy Moore

Sally Braddock is a widow and worth billions of dollars. When her children and spouses come to her place in Vail, Colorado for Christmas things go from good to very bad within moments.

Her children have all inherited a trust fund worth $25 million dollars but all have managed to squander their fortunes. When Sally makes the statement that she is going to cut them all off someone takes matters into their own hands and in the morning they discover someone has been murdered.

With a snowstorm keeping them all together will they discover who the murderer is before they strike again?

I really enjoyed this book and for a portion of this book I was super mad at the author! I was definitely into the book and had suspicions but there were lots of suspects!

I really liked Sally and believe that her kids were just so entitled that they had no concept of real life and were definitely given too much money at an early age. Sally did her best but it was obvious that although her kids loved her they had no desire to give up the money they felt they deserved.

The children and their spouses were each suspicious given their financial situations. Each had a reason for not wanting to lose Sally's fortune giving each one a motive. I know I had some ideas but due to the twists and turns I was never really sure if I was right or not.

The author does an amazing job of keeping you in suspense and wondering what is happening next! This was the first time I have read this author and it definitely will not be my last!

My review of Secret Sins by Kathy Kulig

Emma Fallon is a reporter on a mission to get the best story possible but when she is set to learn more about BDSM clubs, specifically Dark Odyssey, she knows she needs to do it or lose the possibility of a job recommendation. She works for the tabloid magazine Scandal but writes under a pen name. She is invited into the club by her friends who aren't aware of her job as a tabloid writer but as someone who works with animals at a local shelter.

Adrian Cayne is a doctor who has taken a break from Dark Odyssey but is back and is ready to be a DOM again. He is instantly attracted to Emma but refuses to take on a newbie after some drama with the last one he had.

But when Emma begins to look for another Dom, will Adrian let her? Will Adrian get suspicious with all the questions Emma asks of him?

When Emma faces some difficulties writing the article will she be willing to let go of her dreams? When secrets are revealed who will take the fall?

This was an interesting read! I liked that it was looking at the BDSM from a different angle than is usually done and although Emma has her reasons for getting in their in the first place she really wants to understand everything about them.

Adrian was an interesting character as he had a bad experience in the past with a newbie yet couldn't stay away from Emma. His reputation was extremely important to him and he liked the secretive nature of the club. I understand why he blew up at Emma so fast as he felt so betrayed! I found the end interesting with what Bill & Geneva Ellsworth did for Adrian.

This was the first time I have read this author and I will read her again.

My review of Crown of Lies (Crown of Lies Duet, #1) by Pepper Winters

Noelle Charlston has been in the business world since she was 16 years old helping to run her father's company, Belle Elle. She is desperate to exprerience life and on her 19th borthday she heads out on her own. But life doesn't go as planned and she meets a mysterious man whom she dubs Nameless.

Three years later she has never forgotten him. As her father hopes she will get involved with Greg Robson she has no attraction and is trying to let him know they have no future together. Then her father meets Penn Everett whom he believes is the perfect match for Noelle. Could Penn be Nameless?

As Noelle tries to figure out what her draw to Penn is, she finds herself in over her head as she starts to figure out clues to her past. Yet it is clear that there are two men after her "heart" but maybe her heart is not what they are really after.

This is book one and the only downfall to this book will be waiting for book two to come out.

I felt pretty bad for Noelle as even though she has such a privileged life she is not actually able to love the life that she wants to. She was forced into the business world at such a young age and never got to live the life of a teenager.

I felt so bad for Noelle when she couldn't find Nameless after everything he did to save her. I have no idea how money couldn't buy his identity.

I thought Penn Everett was a definitely a man with secrets and I hated how cocky he was with Noelle. I am very terrified of where and what his motives are with Noelle as I can see him using her and then discarding her after he has got what he wanted.

Greg Robson really wants Belle Elle and it'll be interesting to see how far he will go to get the company!

This book left me on the edge of my seat and I am anxiously waiting for book 2 to come out!!
